Neurological Disorders

Neurological diseases affect millions of people worldwide each year. Apollo's capacity to deliver proteins across the blood-brain barrier provides a platform for developing treatments for such disorders, including Alzheimer’s Disease and stroke.

Alzheimer’s Disease affects more than 15 million people worldwide. The disease is a long-term degenerative neurological disorder. No effective treatment is available. Existing treatments only provide a mild slowing of progression of symptoms. Apollo’s product should provide the opportunity for recovery of cognitive ability, because it is designed to transport directly into the brain, across the blood-brain barrier. More …

Neuroprotection for stroke: Stroke is the third-leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability in the US, where the incidence of first-time strokes is more than 400,000 per year. At current trends, this number is projected to jump to 1 million per year by 2050. Around 730,000 patients suffer a stroke of some description each year in the US, costing US$50 billion per year. The neuronal cell death caused by stroke results in potential intellectual and physical impairment. Apollo’s product will be an injectable protein intended to travel across the blood-brain barrier. The drug has the potential to assist in protection of neurons from the process of cell death in stroke, once across this barrier. The global value of neuroprotective therapeutics for diseases including stroke was calculated at US$1.8 billion in 2003. More…
