Apollo to enter over-the-counter arthritis market, calls for trial volunteers
Millions of arthritis sufferers could be the unexpected beneficiaries of Apollo Life Sciences' breakthroughs in anti-inflammatory products.

Anti-inflammatory treatments treat pain by reducing inflammation, which arises from injury, infection or immune system abnormalities, as with arthritis.

Apollo has developed a highly promising formula for treating inflammation topically - that is, applied directly to the skin in affected areas.

Pre-clinical testing of Apollo's pharmaceutical formula indicates it is highly effective in reducing inflammation. The company is working to develop several pharmaceutical applications for the technology.

However, the discovery has also opened unexpected doors in the over-the-counter (OTC) market. Apollo has identified several possible uses in personal care and pain-killer product lines, and intends to capitalise on the opportunity.

"Because OTC products can be tested and approved more quickly than pharmaceuticals, we plan to develop and retail products in these markets in the short to medium term," said Greg Russell-Jones, Apollo's Director of Science.

"This will boost early cashflow."

Apollo is developing an anti-inflammatory OTC formula to treat mild to moderate arthritis. The product has a large potential market: Arthritis Australia says 3.4 million Australians are affected by the condition.

Currently, ibuprofen and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs) are the main treatment for mild to moderate symptoms.

However, recent studies and the high-profile Vioxx recall have linked NSAIDs to heart attacks and ulcers. Apollo believes its anti-inflammatory formula does not have these side-effects.

Apollo has lodged a provisional patent on its technology and plans to seek licensing approval by the Therapeutic Goods Administration before marketing the OTC anti-inflammatory this year.

Apollo is seeking volunteers to participate in a trial of the OTC arthritis application. If you or anyone you know suffers from mild to moderate arthritis, email Apollo for more information.
