| Apollo reports on successful year |
Executive Chairman John Priest | Apollo’s recent AGM provided an ideal opportunity for the company to report on a successful year and look forward to the future.
Held at a Sydney airport hotel, the meeting gave shareholders the chance to catch up with key Apollo personnel, including Executive Chairman John Priest, Science Director Dr Greg Russell-Jones and COO Dr Jane Craig.
In his presentation, John Priest outlined how the company had met and surpassed its original objectives across drug delivery, therapeutics, over the counter products and human proteins.
“We have added significantly to our capabilities,” he said. “And our emphasis on first class research and development will position Apollo to deliver highly marketable drug offerings.”
Among the highlights of the year was the development of needle-free insulin for people with diabetes. Apollo’s oral drug delivery technology, OradelTM, has been a major addition over and above listing objectives and the transdermal drug delivery system, TransDTM, has been refined. Apollo Cytokine Research also significantly increased the number of human research proteins it offers for sale.
Drugs based on proteins are part of the global biopharmaceuticals market, which had an estimated value of US$50 billion a year in 2005 and a 10% annual growth rate.
“By combining our drug delivery platforms with our proprietary human proteins, we will be able to offer more effective and lower-cost therapeutics,” John Priest said.
He also pointed out that Apollo’s technologies dovetailed with the requirements of the healthcare system.
“Our technologies will benefit the healthcare system in the areas of compliance, better control and prevention.
“For example, our oral insulin is better for needle-phobics, children and the elderly; it controls blood glucose levels because of its slow-release mechanism; and it helps prevent complications arising from diabetes such as cardio-vascular disease and glaucoma, therefore saving on healthcare costs.”
