Apollo flies the flag for Australia at BIO in the US
Everything is big at the BIO conference! The annual Biotechnology Industry Organisation (BIO) meeting in North America each year has more CEOs, companies, investors and exhibitors than any other biotech conference on the planet.

With more than 20,000 attendees from around the globe the BIO meeting is credited with putting biotechnology on the world stage every time it meets. This is largely because of its ability to merge small and medium innovators and those with money or resources to invest. The Australian federal and state governments send hordes of observers to this event to keep an eye on how Australian companies are measuring up compared with international innovators in biotech. Australia continues to punch well above its weight, thanks to the leading edge research by companies such as Apollo.

At next month’s (May) BIO2007 in Boston Apollo Life Sciences will be a key component of the Australian delegation of more than 30 companies attending the event. Apollo will exhibit in the Australian section of the exhibitor’s pavilion. Known – among other things - for its highly successful wine tasting event on the second evening of the three day conference, the Australian and New Zealand areas are among the most popular at the meeting for thirsty conference goers.

According to CEO, John Priest, Apollo is now at a stage where the company can present itself as a key player in Australia’s push into the lucrative international biotech space, “If there’s a marketplace where we can attract attention, it will be BIO,” he said.

“While we already have an international presence which continues to excite with our human proteins, being at BIO means we have the opportunity to raise our profile further with key international investors and pharmaceutical industry players.”

The meeting showcases groundbreaking developments and research and is considered an essential event among industry heavyweights and politicians. It presents such potentially lucrative contract possibilities that Australia’s political, leaders such as Queensland and Victorian Premiers, Peter Beattie and Steve Bracks, attend the event religiously.

Last year, BIO 2006 in Chicago, saw more than 500 media from 60 nations attend. With speakers such as President Bill Clinton and the CEOs of Big Pharma companies such as Abbott, Biogen and Amgen the conference led to more than 11,000 meetings between companies.

According to the Victorian Innovation Minister, John Brumby, who attends each year, BIO is the most important biotech conference in the world. "We have to be at BIO to showcase our capabilities and commercial potential while all the world is watching,” he said.
