| Apollo BIO Conference Success |
BIO 2007 International Convention | Apollo’s attendance at last month’s BIO convention in Boston was a stand-out success with the company meeting five of the world’s ten top pharmaceutical companies.
BIO is the biggest international biotechnology conference. It has the reputation for being the once-a-year event where deals and reputations are made and, according to CEO, John Priest, Apollo’s trip to Boston was a great way to showcase the company on the international stage.
“There was great interest in Apollo’s proteins and delivery systems,” said Glenn Pilkington, Apollo’s Head of Protein Development.
“By the end of the three day conference, we had had successful meetings with five of the Top Ten pharmaceutical companies, which – for a first time attendee to BIO – is a very big deal.” He added that, while its not possible to name the companies that met with Apollo for confidentiality reasons, the Top Ten are Johnson & Johnson, Merck and Co, Novartis, Bristol-Myers Squibb, GlaxoWellcome, SmithKline Beecham, Roche, Wyeth, Pfizer and Abbott Laboratories.
Mr Pilkington added that – following these meetings - three major pharmaceutical companies are now considering conducting Proof-of-Principle studies using Apollo’s platform technologies.
In addition Apollo held seven key meetings – two to establish distribution agreements for the Company’s growing research proteins business. The remaining five were with major companies keen to use Apollo’s proteins as standards for protein-based therapeutics. “The ease with which we managed to set up meetings, and the number of very senior people keen to meet with Apollo – is evidence that out reputation is spreading internationally as a source of high quality proteins,” Leanne Daly, Director of Sales and Marketing for Apollo Cytokine Research, said.
This year’s BIO meeting, organised by the US-based Biotechnology Industry Organization, drew a record 22,366 attendees (a 15% increase on 2006) with representatives from 64 countries.
According to Mr Priest, the success of this year’s visit means that Apollo will certainly be attending next year’s convention in San Diego. But, he adds, there is much to do in the coming year. “We have got onto the radar of Big Pharma. By next year we hope to have an even bigger presence – both in platforms delivery and in protein production,” Mr Priest said. |
